The Lighthouse partnered with the Vietnamese Women’s Association of Toronto to coordinate the “Preventing Abuse of Loving Seniors” workshop. The workshop consisted of 4 sessions, held on April 17, April 24, May 1, and May 8 at The Lighthouse. Together, the Vietnamese seniors learned about elder abuse prevention, causes of elder abuse, elder abuse in institutional settings, and abuse prevention planning. With language barriers, Vietnamese seniors facing domestic violence do not know where to find help. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to successfully equip the seniors with knowledge to defend themselves and others. One of the participants, Thien Pham said, “I am grateful for the information I learned in this workshop. It helped me realize that seniors like myself have the right to live free from physical, emotional, financial, sexual, and medication abuse and neglect. Ms. Trang Tran, the facilitator, really took the time to answer all of my questions and I am excited to learn more about my civil and legal rights.” The Lighthouse would like to encourage all Vietnamese seniors to join us at Part 2 of the “Preventing Abuse of Loving Seniors” workshop. To register, please contact Thuy Tran at 416.535.6262, ext.225.
